Actionable Tip of the Day

Here is the hiring process that you should follow to hire the right talent for your company:

  1. Open a job post in Jakarta, Indonesia or Manila, Phillipines or Bogota, Colombia

  2. Test the candidates’ English level

  3. Test the candidates’ technical skills with customized skill tests

  4. Interview

  5. Onboarding

  6. Retention

By following this process, you will reduce the amount of unqualified talent that you would need to interview. Remember that interviews are not scalable, whereas the other processes are.

You’re being lied to

Did you know that 76% of applicants admitted to lying during the hiring process (JobWinResume)? Especially when hiring creative talent, it is very common for marketing teams to get fooled by CVs and Portfolios.

There are 3 reasons for this:

  1. It’s now very easy to create a perfect CV using AI templates

  2. Candidates can easily say they created a big project, even though they only played a small part in the actual thing.

  3. It’s very difficult to verify someone’s portfolio or creative work as you can’t do a reference check on it

So it’s not your fault, it’s just candidates have spotted loopholes in the traditional hiring process.

That’s why you need to prevent getting fooled by doing skill tests.

A skill test is a technical test you create for editors, designers or any other creative roles.

Basically, you get a ‘sample’ of their work, before you even interview them.

You create the skill test based on what you actually want them to do every day.

For example, an ecommerce agency hiring for video editors would create a skill test where the candidate has to split 1 raw footage into 3 different ad creatives.

You also need to create skill tests to account for 2 things: speed and quality.

Speed test: Candidates have to finish the ‘sample’ under a tight deadline (1-3 hour turnaround time)
Quality test: Candidates are given more time to create the ‘sample’ as well as they possibly can (24-48 hour turnaround time)

If you really design your skill tests like this and have all your candidates do them before even interviewing them, you will save a lot of time and money in your hiring process.
