What happens when your VA gets sick?

Strong warning to take care of this one thing...

I've finally recovered from a week-long illness and it got me thinking. I'm lucky enough to pay for my hospital bills because of my business. A lot of in-house full-time employees would also have health insurance from the office. But, how about your VAs?

A lot of companies that outsource by using VAs, Freelancers or remote talent always do one thing:

They treat remote talent like 2nd class citizens.

VAs and remote talent don't get the same level of care as in-country employees do. This is not the right approach if you're actually serious about building a strong remote team.

Take care of them as if you would your in-country employees.

Give them health insurance and benefits.

Give them proper time-off to make sure they don't get sick.

You might think you don't need to do this now. Wait and see until you get stuck in the hire-and-fire cycle of outsourcing.

You'll start blaming the talents, only to realize that you've not been treating them well.

It's also simple to buy health insurance for your remote employees. Have your employees buy an individual insurance plan (either government-backed or private). Then reimburse that cost as you pay their salary. Simple.

Do you take care of all the people that work for you?
