Actionable Tip of the Day

When doing interviews, it’s very important for you to ask behavioural interview questions. This is to test your candidates’ personality and soft skills. Here is a cool pdf I found that has the most comprehensive list of questions I’ve ever seen:

Deep Dive

Here's how to find remote talent that can ACTUALLY speak English:

You can have the most skillful candidate in the world, but if they can't speak English, then what's the use?

Companies have hired remote talent based on the English they hear during interviews.

What if I told you that this is not enough?

A candidate must have a deep grasp of the English language. They need to be able to think in English, not only to speak it.

That's why interviews are not enough. You need to test their writing, reading, and listening, as well as speaking. This is standard practice, but a lot of online businesses don't do this.

It's usually down to a lack of know-how.

You don't need to design your own English test. There are hundreds already out there for you to use.

These are 3 of my favorite ones:

TestGorilla ($190/month for unlimited tests)

  • English C2 --> For positions heavy on writing (e.g., content writer)

  • English C1 --> For more creative positions (e.g., video editor)

Duolingo English Test ($65 for 1 test)

It's a bit more expensive. But, even institutions like Oxford and Harvard accept the Duolingo English Test.

English Radar Test (FREE)

Tests a candidate's English abilities based on the C2 grading scale. It's a standardized test that's trustworthy and FREE.

Here's the link:

My company uses TestGorilla because of the scale it offers. I need to test many candidates at once for all my clients.

When hiring internally, I recommend free tests like English Radar. You can also ask the candidates to provide past English test results like IELTS/TOEFL or TOEIC. The certificates should not be more than two years old, though.

It's very important for you to make sure that your remote worker understands English. Not to speak it, but to actually understand the language.
